Health classes explained

The four tiers—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—explained: what each means and what determines your slot.

Term premiums depend on rate class. Names differ between insurers, but the hierarchy holds: Preferred Plus (or Super Preferred / Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, then Standard, with table ratings for extra-high risk. Smokers occupy their own ladder at steeper rates.

What underwriters look at

Underwriters weigh your frame, blood pressure, cholesterol, early family heart or cancer events, driving record, medications, job, recreation, and tobacco. Top class requires clean marks on almost everything; Preferred bends slightly; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions like controlled high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

Describe your health truthfully: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, Average with Standard. Quotes match your stated class; underwriting confirms the final one. Uncertain? Quote both, weigh them, and let the app pick. Picking a rosier class won't shrink your real rate—just your estimate.

We can steer you to carriers with looser criteria for your situation, which frequently beats chasing the lowest published rate.
